Born in 1923, "Big" Joe LeClair Jr. became a Scout in 1935 with Troop 1 (now 52) in Oakville, four years prior to the founding of Camp Mattatuck. Joe served in the military during World War II from 1942 to 1945, after which he returned to Mattatuck.
During the 1950's he was involved in many projects at camp because he was good friends with ranger Ed Lovrinowicz. Among those were the wagon wheel lights in the dining hall, applying the stone facing in the dam, and the first chapel in camp. In the 1980s, Joe assisted in the reconstruction of the amphitheater. |
With the appointment of his old friend Tom Horan as Camp Director in 1973, Joe started working as a volunteer staff member. He directed cars in the parking lot with Dick Giacin and Joe George, served as a commissioner, inventoried and repaired tents, mapped water lines and other camp properties, and in general, was a valued resource and advisor to the camp staff.
Joe was an Assistant Scoutmaster for 14 years, then served as Scoutmaster from 1955 to 1976, and was on the Troop Committee from 1976 to 2017. He was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, and in 1960, Joe LeClair Jr. received the Silver Beaver Award.
