Supporting Matatuck

The Mattatuck Volunteers

The Mattatuck Volunteers is an organization of individuals who have been dedicated to supporting camp for the past 40 years. This is done through helping at workdays and as needed to promote the physical upkeep of the property, supporting various events and camp programs throughout the year, in-kind and financial donations, and more.

The current Executive Committee of the Mattatuck Volunteers consists of the following people: Dave Russell (Chair), Mark Abbott (Vice Chair), Rob Reed (Treasurer), Chris Perkins (Secretary), JT Plona (Publicity Officer), and Jeromy Nelson (non-voting, ex-officio member as Camp Director). Except for the Camp Director, Executive Committee members serve two-year, renewable terms and are elected at the Annual Meeting in January. The Chair and Secretary are elected in odd-numbered years and the Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Publicity Officer are elected in even-numbered years.

There are also several standing committees of the Volunteers that are each led by a coordinator or two co-coordinators. Committees are established by the Bylaws and coordinators are appointed by the chair. Committees may also be created by the Executive Committee on a temporary basis. Current committees and their respective coordinators or co-coordinators:

Projects (Lucas Nelson)

Gala (JT Plona and Chris Perkins)

Tom Horan Scholarship (Pete Gati)

Big Joe's Jog (Rob Mendela)

Special Task Force on Youth Engagement (Chris O'Leary and Connor Michaud)

At the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Mattatuck Volunteers, after the adoption of the newly revised bylaws, a new dues system was approved by a voice vote of the members present. Annual dues were set at $25.00 for those age 21 years or over and $10.00 for those under the age of 21. Dues will not be required to attend workdays or meetings; the only privileges afforded by having one's dues paid are the privilege of voting and the ability to become a member of the Executive Committee. At the June 13, 2026 meeting of the Volunteers, it was approved by voice vote that the new system go into effect on September 1, 2026, and that the "dues year" would run from September 1 of a given year to September 1 of the next. That is, if one pays their dues at any point, they will have "dues-paid" status until the first September 1 that follows the paying of their dues. It was also agreed to that any person who registers as a member of the Mattatuck Volunteers using the online portal below before September 1, 2026 will be considered to have their dues paid until September 1, 2027. Further information will be shared about how to pay your dues closer to the effective date.

There is also a "Camp Mattatuck Friends" group on Facebook. It is not an official group of the Volunteers or of the Reservation, but lots of good information, memories, and photos are often shared there. You may join by clicking below.

The bylaws of the Mattatuck Volunteers are available here.

Mattatuck Gala

The Volunteers's primary fundraiser, the Mattatuck Gala is an event held annually in November that raises thousands of dollars with the goal of sustaining Mattatuck for years to come. We recently began giving out awards at the gala. This past year's recipients were Bob Peoples (Point Award), Troop 52, Oakville (Mission Brown Unit Service Award), and Sanford & Hawley (Compass Award). Pictured in the navy suit is Dr. Ray Sullivan, who won the first ever Point Award in 2023.

Big Joe's Jog

The 5K is a trail run on the Mattatuck Scout Reservation, named after long-time volunteer Joe LeClair Jr (Big Joe). All profits from this event will go towards the Thomas J. Horan scholarship. The Mattatuck Volunteers award this scholarship annually to deserving staff members continuing their post-high school schooling and training, whether at a trade school, professional certificate program, or college/university.
